WoW Talebound demo: free on the PTR October 30 to November 1, no subscription

World of Warcraft

WoW's Talebound demo runs October 30 to November 1 on the PTR, free with no subscription: Red Hollow intro, 3 tales, 3 classes and 3 difficulties.

Blizzard is opening a free Talebound demo on the World of Warcraft Player Test Realm (PTR) from October 30 to November 1, 2026. Talebound is the new standalone roguelite mode coming in patch 12.1.7, and for this Halloween weekend no subscription is required to try it.

Quick summary

  • When: October 30 to November 1, 2026 (Blizzard has not posted start and end times)
  • Where: the WoW PTR, installed from the Battle.net app
  • Cost: free, no active subscription needed
  • Content: the Red Hollow introduction, 3 tales, 3 classes and 3 difficulties
  • Group: solo or with friends

What’s in the Talebound demo

  • Introduction: Red Hollow, where your traveler meets the mysterious Storyteller and enters Quillgrave.
  • Three tales: Darkhaven, Greenthistle Wood and Greywake’s Expedition.
  • Three classes: Slayer, Inquisitor and Witch, all playable.
  • Three difficulties: Normal, Veteran and Heroic, available in every tale.

The three tales

Darkhaven is the only place that survived a plague that wiped out everyone beyond its borders. It is home to Konrad von Sonnesheim, the Lord Marshal, and Alexandre Dozsenc, the Blood Bishop.

Greenthistle Wood holds two villages, Shady Hollow and Riverton, terrorized by two witches, a giant and a host of fiends.

Greywake’s Expedition takes you to Greywake’s Hill, a once-prosperous island where many have fallen to Zzyg’th, the Hadal Tyrant, and to Chathoa, the Herald from Beyond.

How combat works in Talebound

Every class can double jump, dodge and guard, so positioning matters more than in regular WoW. Lesser enemies flinch when hit. The Slayer, for example, mixes sword combos with a shotgun, mines and a Silver Bolt leap that hits the healthiest enemy in range. Blizzard warns that several talents are still in progress and tuning can change during the test.

How to join

  1. Open the Battle.net app with any Battle.net account.
  2. Select World of Warcraft and switch the version menu to the PTR, then install it.
  3. Log in between October 30 and November 1 and pick Talebound.

The announcement does not mention rewards that carry over to the live game, so treat it as a test drive. Want the bigger picture of the patch? Read our WoW 12.1.7 Echoes of the Worldcore PTR overview.
