Subclassing lets an eligible character train a skill line from another class. You need a character at Level 50 and the “Level 50 Hero” achievement on your account. You also need the “A Study in Discipline” quest before you can use the system.
This guide covers the unlock, the first selection, and the limits that matter before you commit to a line. The steps follow ZeniMax’s support instructions, checked October 12, 2026.

Who can use Subclassing
Reach Level 50 on a character and earn the “Level 50 Hero” achievement. Then start “A Study in Discipline” in one of these ways:
- Open the Crown Store and look under “Quest Starters”
- Speak with Bahtra at-Hunding near a wayshrine in Riften, Evermore, or Dune
- Open the Subclassing interface from the Skills menu and grant yourself the quest
After you accept the quest, speak with Bahtra at-Hunding and choose “Choose Disciplines: Free” when prompted. The quest directs you to the Subclassing system.
Equip your first subclass skill line

- Open the Skills menu and select Subclassing below your class skill lines.
- Choose a class skill line you have not mastered on your account.
- Select the line for Subclassing, then equip it in one of your available skill-line slots.
- Equip a skill from the new line so the quest can register both objectives.
- Confirm the selection and finish the quest.

The system selects a complete skill line, not individual abilities from several lines. You level that line from scratch.
Limits to plan around
You can subclass up to three skill lines at once across your account. A selected line stays locked in until you level it to its maximum rank. Once it is mastered, the system adds a collectible to your account and you can choose another line in its place.
Keep at least one skill line from your character’s original class. You cannot replace all three original class lines. You can also select only one line from each other class, unless that class is your character’s base class.
Common mistakes
- Starting the quest before a character reaches Level 50 or the account earns “Level 50 Hero”
- Treating a mastered or already-subclassed line as a new Subclass choice
- Expecting individual abilities to mix across multiple lines
- Trying to replace all three lines from the character’s original class
