Where the names come from
The names belong to abandoned characters that have been inactive for at least two years and were either permanently banned, never members, or only had membership paid with Bonds that ended at least five years ago.
Anti-sniping measures and queues
Jagex says it has already banned more than 11,000 characters it believes were meant for name sniping, and the anti-cheat team will watch for unusual behaviour for the whole release. There is now a queue both in-game and on the website, and Jagex can lengthen or shorten the wait depending on traffic. Names taken by bad actors may be released again.
Things to know before you change names
- Your previous name stays reserved for at least 35 days, or up to six months depending on how long you had it.
- If you changed names recently, there is a 28-day cooldown, which you can remove by redeeming a Bond.
- Support cannot get you a specific name or tell you which batch a name is in.
- A Hardcore Worlds character that resets is only eligible again once it has the required skill total.
